Adopty Mum is written by Elena Holmes. It is an honest and at times humorous account of dealing with infertility and moving on to adoption. The book covers a whole host of topics from making the adoption application to celebrations of progress and developing attachments.
Due to my profession and my natural desire to help children and families I read a wide range of books on attachment, therapeutic parenting, adoption and self-care. Some books I find a “difficult” read and often find myself flicking back a few pages because my mind has wondered. I gain so much more from reading real life stories from adopters. Each chapter in this book relates to a different aspect of the families journey.
There are very practical and down to earth accounts of their day-to-day experiences of real life experiences like holidays, schooling, making friends and meeting strangers.
The book is a very easy and relaxed read whilst still addressing the ups and downs of a very challenging journey. It does not “sugar coat” reality. The book made me laugh and become quite emotional at times and made me feel like I was listening to a friend. It is such an easy read I finished the book in a day.
The descriptions of how the family as a whole address and cope with situations are very helpful. I understand every child and family will encounter different issues, but this book will make you feel confident that you can deal with whatever comes next.
